Session
Description:
This presentation reviews
the application of UV disinfection on potable drinking water supplies. The theory behind UV disinfection, design
consideration, lamp types, pros and cons of low pressure and medium pressure reactors and
system operating considerations pertaining to day-to-day operations and maintenance of a
UV system .
Current issues are addressed pertaining to the inactivation of
pathogens such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium at UV doses specific to the
organism and to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as chloro-organics or
bromate formed by chemical disinfectants. Examples of how UV can be used to reduce DBPs
will be reviewed.
The sensitivity of Cryptosporidium
oocysts and Giardia cysts to UV, but the
resistance of these same organisms to chemical disinfectants, points not only to
cost-effective multi- barrier strategies for combining chemical and UV disinfection for
pathogen control, but also to effective strategies for dramatic reduction in byproduct
formation.
The use of UV in advanced oxidation with hydrogen peroxide for
taste and odor issues as well as the destruction of low molar weight, non-filtered
contaminants such as endocrine disrupters, pharmaceuticals and pesticides will be
discussed.
A review of
current and upcoming regulations as well as practical UV disinfection applications will be
presented.
